Did anyone make New Year resolutions? Have you kept to them? This year I didn't. At New Year my eldest daughter was ill, as was I, and my resolution was pretty much to get up, get dressed, shower and eat each day, and survive until evening. Yes, that's how sorry for myself I felt. One has to indulge self pity from time to time, before telling oneself to strap on a pair and woman up. (Ugh, just used a couple of the expressions I hate most).
I think new year resolutions aren't easy to keep to, whether they be to eat or drink less, stop smoking, spend less, be a better person and there are two reasons why they are hard to keep. One is that they are made during a period of excess: excess food, drink, family, in laws, children home from school. However much some people enjoy the holiday season, we aren't quite in our right minds those couple of weeks. And when we are out of our comfort zones it's hard to make and keep realistic resolutions.
The other reason they are hard to keep is because just round the corner is January. There just isn't a more depressing month of the year, at least in the northern hemisphere. And I say that as someone who loves winter, most years. And the last few years January has been particularly rubbish. Economic crises, increasing food and fuel bills, and the bloody weather. Summer seems a long way away in January.
February on the other hand is much more positive. It's a nice short month, so pay day comes round much faster. Te days are noticeably getting longer, and although the weather is still rubbish there is a light at the end of the tunnel, as March is on its way. And March means spring, sometimes warm weather, bunnies and lambs and Easter isn't far away with all the chocolate and a lovely long weekend. And in February there is pancake day, which is wonderful.
So I'm thinking February is a better time to make resolutions for the year, and here are mine:
1) Not take up smoking again
2) Learn some veggie dishes thereby improving my diet
3) Write write write. Yes, I am another blogger with an idea for a book, and I reckon I can kindle publish it by summer. It's coming along nicely.
4) Drink less Coke.
5) Watch the whole series of The Wire, and West Wing
6) Have a clearout and sell lots of stuff on ebay. I want to make 500€ on ebay this year.
7) Get over my fear of driving on motorways
8) Not get pregnant.
So, if you're feeling down at not keeping to New Year Resolutions, why not join me in making February resolutions.
